Reinforced Stone Grates

Reinforced Stone Grates As Better Alternatives To Natural Stone

Recently, there is some controversy surrounding the use of unconventional materials for grate systems. Steel has been the most commonly used material for gratings, and many builders and architects are quite skeptical about trying their hand at something different. Steel grates have the advantage of being cheap and readily available. However, steel grates are prone to rusting; they produce a loud clanging when a vehicle passes over them; their production requires the consumption of non-renewable natural resources, and they come in somber shades of gray and black. Homeowners are already bored with steel grates.

An alternative for steel grates is natural stone. Nothing beats the elegance and timeless majesty of stone when incorporated in the design of any building. The inclusion of stones in architectural design can transform a drab part of a house or garden into a nook that exudes a warm welcome to anyone who needs a place away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. A stone wall imparts a noble air to a building, reminiscent of ancient English castles bathed in the golden glow of a rising sun.

However, the architects who are skeptical about using natural stone as grates may have a valid reason for their doubts.

For one thing, stone grates are extremely brittle. In order to compensate for this brittleness, thick stone slabs are needed. However, stone slabs are extremely heavy; it is very impractical when lifting these heavy stone grates during maintenance. Moreover, natural stone grates are non-compliant with international standards, such as BS EN 124.1994 (specifying the standard loading and support capacity of manhole covers and gully tops in areas where there is vehicular or pedestrian traffic).

In addition to the weak tensile strength of natural stone grates, the designs that can be etched on the surface of the slabs are quite limited.

There is now a need to develop materials that closely resemble natural stone but should exhibit durability, safety features, aesthetics, and ecological friendliness.

Jonite was the product of a breakthrough and innovative technology perfected by a committed research team. It is made out of a type of reconstituted stone reinforced for added tensile strength.

Our reinforced stone grates are compliant with international grating standards, such as BS EN 124.1994. If a client specifies it, then Jonite grates can be manufactured to support vehicular load weights of up to more than 40 tonnes.

Jonite products are compliant with international safety standards requirements. The reinforced stone grates have a B classification for the slip resistance test method also known as AS/NZS 4586 Appendix C.

Jonite grates are crafted with visually appealing designs. When using conventional building materials, the outcome in terms of design is usually limited. With reinforced stone grates, the possibilities are endless. Our reinforced stone grates naturally blend with other materials, and the design exudes an elegance that can never be matched by either steel or natural stone.

We are LEED Label Certified for making use of recycled materials in order to manufacture our reinforced stone grates and other products. At Jonite, we aim to help preserve the environment by promoting environmentally friendly work practices and by reducing our carbon emissions. We are successful in this aim, considering that Jonite was awarded the Green Label Certification by the Building Construction Authority of Singapore for our low carbon emissions.
