North Dakota got its name from the Dakota people who is part of the Sioux peoples. They inhabited the plains prior to the arrival of the Europeans in the 18th century. During that time, the natives were farmers and gatherers, after the Europeans arrived, the area transformed into fur-trading posts ans settlements on the Upper Missouri river from St. Louis. As time passed, the region became rich farmlands for Anglo settlers and farms and ranches continued to flourish.
In the United States, North Dakota is one of the least populated states. Although the climate is ideal for agricultural use, North Dakota is vulnerable to major natural disasters such as blizzards, tornadoes, floods and droughts.

Located in Bismarck, the structure is 21 stories and 242 feet tall, and had to be built after a fire ravaged the original capitol building in 1930.
