Our Jonite Creative Grates (drain covers) inspire originality on a different level. A variety of more creative designs have also been created for enhanced sensibilities.
One of the ways Jonite looks for inspirations in our product design is to look back into the past to grasp the essence and history of our products. Drain covers have a long history since the earliest days of Man. Since the dawn of civilization, Man has faced the problem of sanitation and water supply. This isn’t simply a logistical problem to obtain clean water for survival, without a proper water infrastructure and sanitation system for the population, civilizations cannot thrive as people will fall to dehydration and diseases. Simply put, without sanitation (drainage system) and proper water supply management, we simply cannot prosper.
During our early days, human settlements could only develop near areas where fresh surface water (rivers or natural spring) were found. Throughout our history over thousands of years, our ancestors have sought to design and build systems of getting fresh water into the communities and draining waste water away.
The focus has historically been the conveyance of raw sewage into natural water bodies such as rivers or seas where waste would be dissipated and diluted. Over the millennia when civilizations progressed, advances in technology allowed greater distance of which waste water could be transported via the sewage system, this removed the geographical limitations of human settlements and big civilizations grew in size. Ancient cities with millions of settlers were only possible because of the drainage system. As early as 3000 BCE, primitive fresh and waste water system made from stone were found along houses which suggests that Man already mastered the science of drainage system thousands of years ago.
The Indus Valley Civilisation in Asia showed early proof of public sanitation and water supply, the Indus developed a number of advanced features where all houses had their own toilets which was connected to a covered sewage system made of brickwork and stone where waste water was emptied to the surrounding rivers and seas. Sewage in the Indus Valley was disposed via underground drains where drains from houses were connected to bigger public drains.
In ancient Rome, the drainage system Cloaca Maxima was considered an engineering marvel of its time, systems of pipes and aqueducts were used to manage the clean water supply and sanitation. The Romans in ancient times already had networks of complex sewer systems.
The past has a great deal of impact on Jonite's gratings (drain covers) today. By manufacturing stone reinforced drain covers, we are continuing the long tradition of using stone - the same material used by our ancestors thousands of years ago. By incorporating our own proprietary technologies, our stone reinforced creative gratings are much stronger and allows us to craft a multitude of themes and designs.
In fact, our creative grates come in 4 categories - pattern, nature, modern and Avant-Garde collections. Our comprehensive range of creative gratings offer just about any design possibilities for architects to choose from. Jonite's creative grates are suitable strictly only for pedestrians and can withstand up to a 6KN static loading (i.e. approximately eight people standing on one piece of grate). However, heavy loading capacities are achievable with customized solutions from our custom design services.Should you need to look for somethings special, Jonite’s Custom Design Services is always ready to take on the challenge of customising a design just for you.
Apart from merely manufacturing high quality creative grates with design inspirations from the past, Jonite is a brand that geniunely cares for the environment. We believe that everyone is a stakeholder on this planet that we call home, sustainable development calls for concerted efforts towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and planet. For sustainable development to be achieved, it is crucial to harmonise three core elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The LEED® Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green building in the U.S.A.
The majesty of natural stone is perhaps best expressed by the magnificence of the stone castles of England. Inspired by the rustic appeal of natural stone, we wondered if the material could be used to make functional and beautiful grates.
With our eye for detail, exquisite craftsmanship and the infinite possiblities we offer in texture and colour, our engaging designs in gratings complement the vision of international architects and designers.
Why Choose Jonite Stone (reinforced) Creative Grates?
Created from 95% natural aggregates and advanced hybrid polymers, Jonite architectural grates provide a finish which is both luxurious and natural to the touch.
The unique material properties of Jonite products which prevents rust and corrosion mean they are equally suited to last a lifetime for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Rough and natural matte surface enables tremendous slip resistance which are tested by international classifications. This provides a much-needed and unparalleled safety feature for schools and hospitals.
As designers and innovators, the last thing we want to do is stifle creativity. We believe that if you can envision it, we can create it, and with Jonite’s custom-made designs adding new dimensions to your vision, the possibilities are endless.
High Mechanical Properties
Jonite stone products have high mechanical properties such as high flexural strength, compressive strength, impact strength, low water absorption & low heat absorption. These impressive stats add to the overall quality and longevity of its products.
Jonite is available in a wide range of standard colors. More specialised colors are possible with unlimited color customization which allows Jonite to be calibrated to almost any hue or shade desired.
Reinforced with specially treated steel frames, the strength of Jonite grates are world acclaimed. Having coined the word 'stone(reinforced)' for the last two decades, Jonite gratings are compliant to international load standards.
Conventional steel and cast iron grates and castings are highly susceptible to theft due to rising scrap value worldwide. Jonite hardscape products however, do not pose any value for scrap due to their stone material integrity.
